The American public has been driven into a state of perpetual confusion surrounding the concept of calories. There are people that take this concept as a scientific fact when it is anything but.
So how did we arrive at this place? A place where every package includes a calorie count. A place that equates 1 pound of fat to 3,500 calories. A place that encourages people to reduce their caloric intake by 500 to 750 calories per day in order to lose weight.
To understand how we arrived at this place we need to look at organizations that directed us there. For example, the World Health Organization defines obesity as an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health and cites that the fundamental cause of obesity and overweight is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended.
Public health strategies are based upon this premise of energy imbalance. It’s time to acknowledge that the public health strategies have failed us with the rates of obesity increasing by 10% per decade.
Since we are discussing energy balance and the term calorie is how we define energy we must first discuss the elephant in the room. The body does not interpret calories the way we have been taught to understand them. In other words, the body does not count calories. The body does not keep track of the amount of calories consumed throughout the day. The body also does not consider the amount of calories ingested to make the body feel full or satiated.
With this being said it is time to relieve yourself from the madness that is calories and everything that is associated with calories, including counting calories.
