The Right Way to Approach Weight Loss

The Right Way to Approach Weight Loss

Obesity is a dangerous medical condition. More than 70% of the American population is currently overweight or obese.

Obesity is associated with metabolic diseases such as high blood pressure, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cancer, coronary artery disease, and even dementia.

At any given time, around half of people suffering from obesity are trying to lose weight.

Losing the weight does not mean that you are healthier.

All of us know that obesity is bad for your health. But obesity is not the problem.

Obesity is just a symptom of underlying metabolic abnormalities such as insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, increase intestinal permeability, etc.

These metabolic conditions are the root causes of obesity and they are the reason that obesity is associated with many other diseases which are also caused by these metabolic dysregulations. Moreover, obesity itself causes worsening of metabolic conditions, ultimately patients suffer from the complications of obesity on a daily basis.

Weight loss plans usually fall under two broad categories:

  1. Trying to force the body to lose the weight. This method does not address what causes obesity in the first place and does not address the metabolic diseases that both caused obesity and got worse by it. Most of the popular weight loss plans falls under this category. This includes, low calorie, extraneous exercise, use of appetite suppressant, HCG dieting, meal replacement therapy, liposuction and bariatric therapy and many more. Losing weight following this methods results in what is called the obesity paradox. Which means that weight loss is associated with higher mobility and mortality.1
  2. Treat the underlying metabolism associated with obesity. Obesity is a symptom and not the disease. Obesity is a complex metabolic derangement whereby the body if forced to carry excess pounds of fat. This method addresses and treats what is currently wrong in your health and your body. The advantage of this methods is you will have a very healthy and permanent weight loss and all the diseases that were associated with obesity will be positively affected. This is the method we use in The Metabolism Clinic for weight loss.
