Most people continue to think that obesity is due to an energy imbalance. Even the majority of physicians still believe in the outdated concept of “calorie in – calorie out”.

This model simply implies: When we eat food, the body start to “burn” the food to generate energy which is measured by the counting calories. A calorie is defined as the approximate amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius at a pressure of one atmosphere. The only way to find out how much calories the food has is to use that food material and transform it to heat and then measure it.

This theory assumes that the body has a calorie counter. So, when we eat, the body starts counting how many calories is in the food that we eat. As if the body once it reaches a certain number of calories “for example 2000” it starts to change the way it uses the food. Instead of “burning” it, it transforms that excess food into fat.

As we can tell, this theory is completely flawed. The body does burn any food and the way the body generates heat is very complicated and does not involve any burning process. The body generates heat through a very complicated metabolic reaction in the mitochondria.

The body does not have a calorie counter. The only way to know how many calories in the food is to burn them “or to read the label”. The body does not have such a mechanism to know how many calories are in every bite we eat.

The body does not transform excess calories or excess food into fat. Fat synthesis is a complicated process that is regulated by many hormonal, enzymatic, and metabolic factors.

Weight gain and obesity is simply a metabolic disorder/imbalance. Every day in our lives, the body creates and stores fat in the form of triglycerides inside of fat cells in a process called lipogenesis. It also takes away fat from the fat cells and use it in a process called lipolysis. It is estimated that every year your body recycle around 10 percent of your total body fat. It means that your fat mass is not just the same. In 10 years, you have a completely different fat mass than what you have now.

These two complicated processes of making fat and losing fat are controlled through many hormonal and metabolic factors. If errors occur in theses hormonal and metabolic factors, the body will be forced to create more fat than lost and obesity will be the result.
