Dr. Andrew D. Timothy, DO, MS
Board Certified Internal Medicine | Functional Medicine Physician
Dr. Andrew D. Timothy is a well-respected, highly-trained Board Certified Internal Medicine physician whose extensive background in metabolism studies began during his undergraduate education majoring in a combined biology, chemistry, and natural sciences. In 2003, his graduate studies led him to Ohio University in Athens, OH whereby he completed his master of science in physiology of exercise with a clinical concentration emphasis. Application of anatomy, physiology, and principles of metabolism were applied to the spectrum of people that included patients with multiple medical co-morbidities to elite collegiate-level athletes. During this time, he also worked in a cardiovascular/pulmonary rehabilitation setting within the hospital providing comprehensive secondary prevention for patients recently recovering from myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve replacement surgery, placement of pacemaker/defibrillator, and percutaneous coronary interventions. This rehabilitation program also provided services to patients with known lung disease such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary fibrosis. It was in this setting that Dr. Timothy learned the value of utilizing an interdisciplinary team of experts that included physicians, exercise physiologists, cardiopulmonary nurses, registered dietitians, and counselors.
Dr. Timothy continued his studies at the post-graduate doctoral level upon the completion of his master’s degree. He became a graduate teaching assistant within the College of Health Sciences and Professions at Ohio University. He also served as a graduate research assistant within the biochemistry laboratory investigating how nutrition and exercise modify blood glucose, lipids, and enzymatic processes. He produced scientific publications during this time in addition to state and national presentations. His post-graduate doctoral studies consisted of investigations aimed at limiting the impact of chronic disease. While continuing to produce research Dr. Timothy began his medical school studies with the intention of delivering his findings from the laboratory setting into the clinical setting by applying them directly to patient care.
In medical school at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, he achieved honors and was selected into the distinguished national honors medical society Sigma Sigma Phi; designated for the top twenty percent of the medical school class. During medical school he remained active in performing research within the laboratory and in the field; including local programs directed at addressing childhood obesity.
Dr. Timothy completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. During this time he continued his research endeavors at both the clinical level as well as systematic hospital based approach. He was selected as national winner of a clinical case at the American College of Physicians National Conference in 2012. In 2014 he completed his residency and specialized in inpatient medicine as a hospitalist due to his passion for caring for the sickest patients.
Dr. Timothy passionately cared for his patients during their admissions within the hospital. He focused on providing the highest level of care to his patients but also utilized their admission to educate his patients about their disease process and how to better manage their health when discharged from the hospital. While he noticed an effect of this approach he also noticed that despite his best efforts a significant percentage of the patient population had no effect. Length of stays became longer and longer with readmission rates becoming higher and higher. Additionally, when patients were re-admitted their list of medications continued to grow increasing the incidence of drug-to- drug detrimental reactions. To address this growing problem Dr. Timothy realized he had to transition his patient care services to the outpatient setting in an effort to address chronic diseases head-on with the intent of reversing them as opposed to managing acute exacerbations of the disease processes within the confines of the hospital setting.
It was time to implement a revolutionary concept that had never been previously utilized in clinical practice. Instead of being dependent on prescription medications in an attempt to control a disease the medical modulation of the metabolism to eliminate a disease became the sole focus. The two most significant healthcare epidemics of our time were now the obsession. Diabetes and obesity affect everyone’s life in some form. The aim of treatment at The Metabolism Clinic is to eliminate obesity and diabetes in the form of type 2 by delivering treatment at the metabolic level.
Dr. Timothy drew upon his past graduate studies, graduate research, expansive literature reviews, medical training, and functional medicine to provide patients with another option; a treatment solution. Together with Dr. Youssef, a synergistic collaboration was formed from past personal experiences and knowledge to form The Metabolism Clinic. A clinic where patients can go to with expectations of maximizing their health by correction of underlying disease processes; as opposed to management of disease processes.
