Dr. Andrew D. Timothy is a knowledg able, highly-trained Board Certified Internal Medicine physician whose background in metabolism studies began during his undergraduate education majoring in a combined biology, chemistry, and natural sciences. In 2003, his graduate studies led him to Ohio University in Athens, OH whereby he completed his master of science in physiology of exercise with a clinical concentration emphasis. Application of anatomy, physiology, and principles of metabolism were applied to the spectrum of people that included patients with multiple medical co-morbidities to elite collegiate-level athletes. During this time he also worked in a cardiovascular/pulmonary rehabilitation setting within the hospital providing comprehensive secondary prevention for patients recently recovering from myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve replacement surgery, placement of pacemaker/defibrillator, and percutaneous coronary interventions. This rehabilitation program also provided services to patients with known lung disease such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary fibrosis. It was in this setting that Dr. Timothy learned the value of utilizing an interdisciplinary team of experts that included physicians, exercise physiologists, cardiopulmonary nurses, registered dietitians, and counselors.
Dr. Timothy continued his studies at the post-graduate doctoral level upon the completion of his masters degree. He became a graduate teaching assistant within the College of Health Sciences and Professions at Ohio University. He also served as a graduate research assistant within the biochemistry laboratory investigating how nutrition and exercise modify blood glucose, lipids, and enzymatic processes. He produced scientific publications during this time in addition to state and national presentations. His post-graduate doctoral studies consisted of investigations aimed at limiting the impact of chronic disease. While continuing to produce research Dr. Timothy began his medical school studies with the intention of delivering his findings from the laboratory setting into the clinical setting by applying them directly to patient care.
In medical school at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, he achieved honors and was selected into the distinguished national honors medical society Sigma Sigma Phi; designated for the top twenty percent of the medical school class. During medical school he remained active in performing research within the laboratory and in the field; including local programs directed at addressing childhood obesity.
Dr. Timothy completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. During this time he continued his research endeavors at both the clinical level as well as systematic hospital based approach. He was selected as national winner of a clinical case at the American College of Physicians National Conference in 2012. In 2014 he completed his residency and specialized in inpatient medicine as a hospitalist due to his passion for caring for the sickest patients.
Dr. Timothy passionately cared for his patients during their admissions within the hospital. He focused on providing the highest level of care to his patients but also utilized their admission to educate his patients about their disease process and how to better manage their health when discharged from the hospital. While he noticed an effect of this approach he also noticed that despite his best efforts a significant percentage of the patient population had no effect. Length of stays became longer and longer with readmission rates becoming higher and higher. Additionally, when patients were re-admitted their list of medications continued to grow increasing the incidence of drug-to- drug detrimental reactions. In order to address this growing problem Dr. Timothy realized he had to transition his patient care services to the outpatient setting in an effort to address chronic diseases head-on with the intent of reversing them as opposed to managing acute exacerbations of the disease processes within the confines of the hospital setting.
Dr. Timothy drew upon his past graduate studies, graduate research, expansive literature reviews, medical training, and functional medicine in an effort to provide patients with another option; a solutional option. Together with Dr. Youssef, a synergistic collaboration was formed from past personal experiences and knowledge to form The Metabolism Clinic. A clinic where patients can go to with expectations of maximizing their health by correction of underlying disease processes; as opposed to management of disease processes.
Dr. Hany Youssef is a highly respected, board-certified internal medicine physician with many years of experience in inpatient hospital medicine. Dr. Youssef graduated from Cairo University School of Medicine in 2001, and after completing his residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, he pursued a career in inpatient internal medicine and hospital medicine. In hospital administration, he has served in several roles, including Hospitalist Program Director, Vice Chief of Staff, and head of the Pharmaceutical and Therapeutic Committee. Throughout his tenure, he has worked with his teams to provide the highest quality of medical care for each patient.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Youssef has taken care of thousands of patients. Early on, he was particularly alarmed by the high incidence of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome, chronic diseases constantly confronting the lives of his patients. Some studies estimate that these diseases affect up to 70% of the population, nearly every family in America having a member victimized by one of these diseases. Dr. Youssef was and remains deeply concerned that conventional internal medicine does not treat the root causes of these diseases but rather focuses only on controlling the symptoms with no answers on the horizon for curing them and making people healthy again.
That gross inadequacy has led Dr. Youssef to spend many years poring over vast amounts of research and studies in both internal medicine and functional medicine with one goal in mind: to fight this obesity epidemic and reverse the chronic diseases associated with it.
Dr. Youssef was deeply appalled by the conventional culture in which people suffering from obesity are being blamed for their disease rather than that their obesity is the result of an underlying metabolic imbalance, and he strongly believes that we should never blame the victim but rather find every possible way to help them. He understands that obesity affects every aspect of his patients’ lives, including their social, financial, and psychological welfare, and that it prevents patients from attaining their full potential. Firmly believing that there should be an answer to this problem, he examined and studied almost every method of weight loss that has been developed, leading him to study the science of functional medicine, which targets correcting the root causes of the chronic disease (obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes) rather than controlling it with medication, for most of these chronic diseases are a result of an underlying metabolic error or imbalance.
With his vast experience and unique combination of both internal medicine and functional medicine, Dr. Youssef has gained the ability not only to take care of his patients’ current medical problems but also to help them achieve their full health potential, reaching their ideal body weight, while working closely with them to reverse the associated chronic diseases.
Dr. Youssef is very passionate about his vision and believes that all his patients deserve to have excellent health, and he firmly believes that applying evidence-based functional and internal medicine combined and utilizing an individualized, physician-supervised plan, he can help his patients to regain their health.
Working very closely with Dr. Andrew Timothy for years, Dr. Youssef and Dr. Timothy have developed a state-of-the-art metabolic correction program that targets the underlying metabolic dysfunction, the root of all the metabolic syndrome diseases: obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. By doing that, their patients will not only effortlessly lose their excess weight but also many of the obesity-associated chronic diseases can be reversed.
Dr.Youssef lives in Charlotte NC with his wife Mary and their 2 children, Amy and Mark. Outside of work, he spends his time with his family and church. He also enjoys running, playing piano and violin. He and his family have experienced dramatic improvement in their health by following the principles of the metabolic correction program, and he would love for all patients to benefit from the knowledge that he and Dr. Timothy have accrued over the years.
I started my journey with Dr. Timothy and Dr. Youssef 3 weeks ago. It has been the best life changing experience for me. I am a diabetic who blood sugar readings were so high and I was on insulin and meds for it. With the help of these two Doctors and the program and eating the right foods, I'm no longer on insulin or meds now. My blood sugar readings have come down and are much better. I have more energy and feel healthier. In my first 2 weeks I lost 14 pounds. I'm so excited that I'm finally on the right track to a healthier metabolism. Dr. Timothy and Dr. Youssef both are very supportive through your journey and I would recommend anyone to make an appointment. You will not regret the decision.
